HISTORIC SIGN POLE
Broadway Department Store
1645 Vine St.
In its heyday, this building was patronized by many celebrities. Opened in 1928 as the B.H. Dyas Company Department Store and designed by architect Fred R. Dorn in the Neoclassical style, it was converted into the Broadway Department Store in 1931. On its roof, the building had one of the first neon signs in Hollywood, which remains a local landmark. Its Tea Room became a popular destination. It helped launch style “firsts” such as women’s slacks, pioneered in films by Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich. In 1983, the store closed and became an office building and later condominiums.
