HISTORIC SIGN POLE
S.H. Kress Department Store
6608 Hollywood Blvd.
Designed by architect Edward F. Sibbert in Art Deco style and built in 1935, this building opened as an S.H. Kress Department Store. In 1947, Frederick Mellinger moved his lingerie business, Frederick’s of Fifth Avenue, from New York to its new West Coast location here to create Frederick’s of Hollywood. In the process, Mellinger restored the building’s striking Art Deco details. Frederick’s innovated countless “under fashions,” including the world’s first push-up bra, the first front-hook bra, some of the first bras with shoulder pads, and the first water bra.
