Jesse Lasky Feature Play Company

1520 Vine St. at Selma Ave.

The southeast corner of Selma and Vine St. was where the first feature-length motion picture in Hollywood, The Squaw Man (1914), was filmed. To do so, Cecil B. DeMille, Jesse L. Lasky and Samuel Goldfish rented real estate mogul Jacob Stern’s barn, which had been converted to a studio and laboratory facility at the end of 1913. Produced on a budget of $15,000, the movie earned more than $225,000. In 1916, Lasky’s company merged with Famous Players Film Co. and Paramount Pictures. Stern’s barn was relocated to 2100 N. Highland Ave, and is now the Hollywood Heritage Museum, California State Historic Monument No. 554.
