Raymond Chandler Square

Hollywood and Cahuenga intersection

In mystery novels written by Raymond Chandler, his characters—gangsters, showgirls, rich women, scam artists, and a savvy private detective by the name of Philip Marlowe— haunt this intersection. Chandler imagined a fictional building here — the Cahuenga Building — as the home of Marlowe’s office and the center of his activities (the bank building on the northeast corner of intersection was rumored to be Chandler’s inspiration). Over the years, many of Chandler’s stories became motion pictures set in Hollywood.
